dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürkiye siyaset tarihi 27 Mayıs 1960 darbesi ve 28 Şubat 1997 post-modern darbesi arasında oldukça sert bir dönem geçirmiştir. Bu dönem içinde, muhafazakâr partilerden yenilikçi partilere kadar oldukça geniş skalada partiler kurulmuştur. Ahmet Arıkan bu dönemler içerisinde hem eğitim hem de siyaset hayatında Türkiye’nin çalkantılı yıllarına tanıklık etmiş, sonrasında da yurt içi/yurt dışı siyasette ve diplomaside aktif rol almıştır. XV. dönemde Milli Selamet Partisi’nin, XIX. dönemde ise Refah Partisi’nin Sivas milletvekilliğini yapmıştır. Darbelerden etkilenmemesine rağmen, parti içi rekabetin sonucu olarak siyasetten uzaklaşmak zorunda kalmıştır. Bu araştırmada, Ahmet Arıkan’ın bizzat kendi ağzından anılarını anlattığı video kayıtlarından, Arıkan’ın kızı, iş arkadaşı ve komşusuyla yapılan röportajlardan ve geçmiş meclis tutanaklarından yararlanılarak, onun çocukluk hayatı, eğitim görme mücadelesi ve Türkiye’nin Arıkan’ın siyasetle uğraştığı dönedeki siyaset hayatı kaleme alınmıştır. 1960- 1997 yılları arasındaki Türkiye siyasetinin, mevki kaygısı gütmeyen siyasetçiler gözünden anlaşılmasında, Arıkan’ın hayatı büyük önem arz etmektedir.en_US
dc.description.abstractTurkish political history hosted a very though process between two political events: May 27, 1960 military coup and February 28, 1997 postmodern coup. Within this time span, there were a variety of parties founded which have ideologies of both conservative to modernist. Ahmet Arıkan witnessed these unstable Turkish political eras both in his education and political lives. Finally, he took role on both Turkish political structure and diplomacy with countries in middle east. He was elected as the parliament member in XV. Term as the representative of National Salvation Party, and XIX. term as the representative of Welfare Party. In this research, Ahmet Arıkan’s childhood years, his education life that is full of struggles and his political life in Turkey’s unstable political structure were investigated by making use of the video recordings that recorded Arıkan explaining his experiences himself, the parliamentary minutes of the period, the interviews done by Arıkan’s daughter, by his colleague and by his neighbor. Ahmet Arıkan’s life is an important source in interpreting the Turkish political structure between the years 1960 and 1997 from the perspective of the politicians that does not worry about having a high status.en_US
