dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractAnadolu topraklarının önemli şehirlerinden biri olan Balıkesir’in bir ilçesi olan Ayvalık, 1923’te gerçekleşen Mübadele Antlaşması’ndan sonra aldığı büyük göç ile ekonomik, eğitim, nüfus gibi hususlarda büyük değişimler geçirmiştir. Günümüzde Ayvalık’ın Hayrettin Paşa Mahallesi’nin bir muhiti olan Macaron da Ayvalık’ın bu değişimleri ile aynı doğrultuda bir süreç yaşamıştır. Sosyal ve ekonomik hayatına adapte olmakta zorluk çeken birtakım Macaron Mahallesi sakinleri ise günlerini bu mahalledeki kahvelerde geçirmeye başlamış ve Macaron Mahallesi’nde kabadayılık yapmaya başlamışlardır. 1960’lı yıllardan itibaren kabadayıların etkinliğinin azalması ile beraber sokak bu ününü kaybetmiş olsa da işçi sınıfına ve düşük gelirli insanlara ev sahipliği yapmasıyla birlikte tekinsiz bir yer olmayı sürdürdü. 2010’lu yıllarda çeşitli butik otellerin ve pansiyonların açılmasıyla birlikte turizmin ilgisini çekmeye başlamasıyla Macaron Mahallesi günümüzdeki şeklini aldı. dc.description.abstractAyvalık, a district of Balıkesir, which has been one of the most important cities of Anatolian lands since the first ages of history, has undergone significant changes in economic, educational, and population issues with the great migration from Greece to Turkey according to the Exchange Treaty in 1923. Today, in the Macaron District, a neighborhood of Hayrettin Paşa District of Ayvalık, a process has gone through in line with these changes in Ayvalık. Some Macaron Neighborhood residents who have difficulties adapting to social and socioeconomic life started spending their days in coffee houses in this neighborhood and created the term swashbuckler in Macaron Neighborhood. Although the neighborhood lost its reputation as the term swashbuckler disappeared in the 1960s, it remained uncanny as it was home to the working class and low-income people. With the opening of various boutique hotels and hostels in the 2010s, the Macaron District took its current form as it began to attract the attention of tourism. This article focuses on tourism and Socio-Cultural effects in the change of the Macaron Neighborhood in Ayvalık today.en_US
