Uluslararası Kadın Birliği ilk toplantısını 1902 yılında Washington'da yapmıştır. Birlik, I. Dünya Savaşı nedeniyle toplantılarına ara vermiştir.
International Alliance of Women assembled in Washington in 1902 for the first time. Even though their intention was to keep on assembling constantly, they had to stop because of the World War I. Turkish women’s desires to have equal rights started from the 19th century but became effective with the new Turkish Republic. The act of Turkish government that gives women the right to vote has caught the attention of International Alliance of Women, through Turkish Women’s Union and the support of the Turkish government; International Women Union chose Istanbul as their meeting place for their 12th congress. During the congress, equal rights for women have been demanded and the importance of peace has been emphasized. Later, with the reason of “Completing its mission” Turkish Women Union has been shut down. Political pressure had an influence on the Union’s disbandment.
