dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTarihi insanlık tarihi kadar eski olan Türk Milleti, birçok farklı milletle etkileşimde bulunmuştur. Japonlar ile olan dostluk, bu etkileşimlerin en önemlilerinden biri sayılabilir. Yüzyılı aşkın süredir devam eden bu dostluğun temelleri 1889'da II. Abdülhamit tarafından İmparator Meiji'ye jest olarak Japonya'ya gönderilen Ertuğrul Fırkateyni ile atılmıştır. Daha sonrasında, çin ve Rusya'yla girdiği savaşları kazanan Japonya, küçük ve tanınmayan bir ülke olarak aldığı bu galibiyetlerle Osmanlı yönetiminin dikkatini çekmiştir. I. Dünya Savaşı döneminde Sibirya'da mahsur kalan Türklerin Japonlar tarafından kurtarılması ise, bu iki ülke arasındaki dostluğu en az Ertuğrul Fırkateyni olayı kadar güçlendirmiştir. Sonraki yıllarda Japon Prensi Takamatsunoiya'nın Mustafa Kemal'i ziyaret etmesi, Tahran'da mahsur kalan Japonların Türkler tarafından kurtarılması gibi pek çok olayla pekişen bu dostlukla alakalı yakın tarihteki en önemli gelişme, 1994 yılında Mersin'deki bir sokağa kardeş şehir Kushimoto'nun isminin verilmesidir. Bu proje de, Kushimoto Sokağı'ndan yola çıkarak bu dostluğun derinliklerini açığa çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır.en_US
dc.description.abstractTurks have interacted with many different nations along their history. The relationship with Japans can be considered as one of the most important ones. The beginning of this significant friendship is the incident of Ertuğrul Fırkateyni in 1889. The ship has been sent to Emperor Meiji from II. Abdülhamit to carry gifts. Afterwards, took attention of Ottomans by defeating two powerful countries Russia and China. During the WWI, by saving the Turks that are hostaged in Sibiria, Japans have strengthened the friendship. Later on, after events such as Prince of Japan Takamatsunoiya visiting Mustafa Kemal, Japans in Tahran that are saved by Turks, the most recent progress is the naming one of the streets in Mersin as Kushimoto, the sister city. In this project, we are aiming to investigate this friendship on the basis of Kushimoto Street.en_US
