Item Open Access 360-degree feedback : the influence of perceptions of organizational culture on upward appraisal system attitudes(Bilkent University, 2003) Yalçın, MuratAt the threshold of the 21st century, organizations have reinterpreted organizational achievement factors for employees and they have started to emphasize the importance of human resources more in their organizational activities. Moreover, human resources have become a global competition element for organizations in their institutional environments. For that reason, organizations have to manage their human resources in a better way to motivate their employees and to drive their energy into organizational achievement. It is also necessary and critical to evaluate properly the performance of employees for various human resource practices such as promoting, compensating, etc. In other words since organizational achievement can be considered as a synergic sum of individual efforts, performance appraisal for improvement purpose is crucial for such an organisation. Ie army organization. The way that an organization measures and evaluates individual employee performance will directly effect organizational achievement. Therefore, evaluation results should reflect the factual evidences about the performance of organizations at the unitary level. To produce iii objective appraisal results, it is necessary to combine evaluations of all stakeholders involved in the process. It is also important to have positive perception of organization wide on the appraisal methods. This study discusses 360-degree feedback and upward appraisal systems that provide supervisors the opportunity to increase their self-awareness. This will also help them to improve their leadership conducts by having feedback from various sources. The system will also increase individual commitment of subordinates by giving them chance to express their opinions about supervisors, and thus, to participate more in the decision making process which is likely to create a higher level of motivation. However if organizations try to implement 360-degree feedback or upward appraisal system without studying the organizational culture, their effort may be futile. This thesis aims at identifying attitudes toward 360-degrees feedback and upward appraisal systems. It also tries to provide a general profile of organizational climate for Turkish Army through perceptions of Army officers.Item Open Access ABC Inventory classification application: Özdemirler(Bilkent University, 1989) Duru, MehmetABC inventory classification can result in more effective control of business. Role of CPAs on family SME performance(Bilkent University, 2019-05) Sırdar, KağanBuilding on Knowledge Based View (KBV) this thesis investigates the formation and the effect of external Chartered Public Accountants’ (CPA) advising services on the performance of family Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME). The results of the study show that family SMEs that utilize internal accounting professionals for basic tasks are more likely to use their external accountant (CPA) for advising tasks, which in turn results in higher performance. The theoretical contributions of this study are first, addressing a research gap in family SME research by signifying the effect of CPA’s advising role on family SME performance (Barbera & Hasso, 2013; Dyer & Ross, 2007); second, challenging the view that conceptualizes basic accounting tasks as an enabler for CPAs to provide advising services to family SMEs; and third, offering a way of combining internal and external knowledge resources to enhance the performance, which contributes a managerial implication as well. Future research can build on the results of this study that combines the perspectives of firms and CPAs simultaneously.Item Open Access Accounting for construction contracts : a case study on Gama Corporation(Bilkent University, 1995) Egel, D. The adjustment of security prices is analyzed in the context of a market model which takes market related factors into account. Direction and speed of adjustment are measured through residual analysis. Weekly security returns are regressed against returns in the market to find average and cumulative residuals around the event date. The regression model and beta coefficients are found to be significant. The results indicate that the adjustment process is slow and positive cumulative average abnormal returns are observed after the event date. This leads to the rejection of market efficiency in semi strong sense and possibility of an above normal profit.Item Open Access Aggregate production planning with linear programming: a case study(Bilkent University, 1991) Alperat, HalukThe aim o f A g g r e g a t e P r o d u c t io n P la n n in g i s t o b a la n c e th e e x p e c te d denuind and s u p p ly f o r a company. Alternative scenarios are applied to the model in order to find optimal allocation of export and domestic production and to maximize the total profit.Item Open Access The analysis of a new entry into the industrial market(Bilkent University, 1996) Sabaz, SerhatThe use of random co-polymer polypropylene (PP-R) in hot water sanitary systems has grown substantially in Europe over the last five years. It is expected that the numerous benefits of PP-r over other materials will help this trend continue, and expand beyond Europe. Ongoing work on standards and specifications promises to further strengthen PP-r pipes' competitiveness. Therefore, the performance of such a new product is worth investigation. Apart from the PP pipe industry, analyzing the overall performance of the whole sanitary pipe sector (Steel and PP pipe) is as important in order to understand major differences. The aim of this study is to analyze the development of a new entry in the Turkish industrial market at a Turkish company that operates as the six largest producer of longitudinally welded steel pipes in Europe. Throughout this study, the market development of PP-r pipes in Europe and in Turkey, together with the various success factors that have contributed to the substitution of traditional non-plastic pipe solutions with PP-R systems in sanitary tap water installations are also introduced. Afterwards, the steps that necessitate a successful entry from the design to launch and the areas where the company shortfall are identified, a new marketing strategy for a successful penetration is developed, and necessary corrections are made for a better competitive action. Finally, in the conclusion part, the internal (company specific) factors that delayed the success of the new product is conveyed.Item Open Access Analysis of securitization of an export credit in Turkey(Bilkent University, 1995) Saracoğlu, AslıThis study aims to analyze a new method of project financing in Turkey which is securitization of an export credit. The results confirm that implied volatility contains valuable information regarding the ex-post realized volatility during the last decade for the S&P 500 market. The empirical findings also indicate that the put implied volatility has a higher forecast performance. Furthermore, from the wavelet estimations it has been concluded that the long-run variation of the implied volatility is consistent and unbiased in explaining the long-run variations of the ex-post realized volatility. Wavelet estimations further reveal that in the long-run put and call implied volatility contain comparable information regarding the realized volatility of the market. However, in the short-run put implied volatility dynamics have better predictive ability.Item Open Access An application of activity based cost management in a military dispensary(Bilkent University, 2000) Bayramlık, HakanThis study stresses the importance of knowing the true cost of a process, product or service; offers a basic overview of activity-based costing and activity-based cost management; evaluates the benefits offered by activity-based costing; offers a comparison of ABC to traditional cost system, and an analysis on how ABC does compute more accurately. The focus is on the use of activity-based costing and activity-based cost management in a military dispensary to increase management's ability to track indirect costs and thereby to provide more accurate data for evaluating results. The overhead is allocated on a more accurate basis among the clinics of the military dispensary. Indirect costs are made direct by using activity based costing system. The true costs of 10 clinics of the dispensary are revealed throughout this study and, a comparison with private clinics’, and a relative savings table of military clinics are presented. Limitations are defined and recommendations are made for future investigations and implementations.Item Open Access Application of AHP to multicriteria inventory classification(Bilkent University, 1993) Güvenir, NurayIn this thesis, a new method based on the application of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to ABC inventory classification is investigated. The traditional ABC classification method utilizes only the unit price and the annual usage of inventory items. However, in some cases, the classification done using only these two criteria turns out to be insufficient. The method described in this thesis enables the integration of several criteria that can be organized in a hierarchy into ABC classification. The method can be summarized as follows: A matrix is constructed by the pairwise comparison of criteria on the highest level. The elements of the eigen vector of this matrix represent the weights (priorities) of the criteria. If a criterion has subcriteria in the hierarchy, the weights computed in the similar manner for the subcriteria are multiplied by the weight of the criterion and inserted in its place. Repetition of these steps for aU levels of the hierarchy, the weight of all criteria are determined. Using the criteria weights determined by the AHP technique, the weighted score of each inventory item is computed. The items sorted by that weighted score are grouped in three classes: A, B, and C, as in the classical ABC classification. This new method is applied to the classification of inventory items used in rock excavation jobs done using blasting by a construction company. The same inventory is also classified according to the classical ABC technique, and the results are compared.Item Open Access Application of Markowitz mean variance model in the Istanbul Stock Exchange(Bilkent University, 1998) Çetin, BatuThis main objective of this research work is to determine the efficient portfolio and construct the efficient frontier regarding the whole set of 129 stocks that have been traded in the ISE during the 1992 - June 1995 period. The analysis is based on the Markowitz’s Mean Variance Portfolio Selection Model that has been devised by Harry Markowitz in 1952. The Markowitz’s model is a quadratic optimization model that proves hard to implement as the number of data incorporated into the model increases. Hence, for the implemetation of the Markowitz’s model for the 129 stocks, a program code has been written on GAMS, a special software package for the solution of quadratic optimization problems. The study is concluded by measuring the perforaiance of the efficient portfolio constructed by utilizing the Sharpe’s index performance measurement tool for the June 1995 - December 1995 period monthly data.Item Open Access An application of Silver Meal Heuristic to MRP lot sizing decisions at Turk Traktor Fabrikasi(Bilkent University, 1995) Esmer, Berkhan N.MRP does not consider setup and inventory holding costs for lot sizing but very quick algorithms like Silver-Meal can be used for lot sizing decisions. A module to apply Silver-Meal Heuristic to manufacturing work order releases at Türk Traktör Fabrikasy, Ankara, Turkey is designed and tested for 3 months. The module processes demand for finished goods, determines lot sizes, checks capacities by loading machines according to the schedule and reports the setup, inventory holding and overtime costs. These cost figures are compared with the MRP lot sizes. It is observed that, the planning time decreased by 90% by designing module in PCs connected to the main databases, and the total costs decreased by 50%.Item Open Access Application of the critical path method to the planning of a technology transfer project using linear programming(Bilkent University, 1993) Emirli, ElifThe main purpose of this thesis is to utilize the critical path method in the planning of a technology transfer project by using linear programming. LINDO software is practiced in establishing the linear programming formulation and a matrix generator is written in C language to input the formulation into LINDO format. In this way, the schedule of the project is created, the completion time of the project is calculated and the activities forming the critical path are determined. Also by applying a parametric analysis to the right-hand sides of the constraints (activity durations) for the noncitical activities, the times when the critical activities became critical are determined.Item Open Access Assembly line balancing problem: Comparison of some heuristic procedures(Bilkent University, 1989) Mete, Hasan AliAssembly line balancing problem can be defined as assigning tasks to an ordered sequence of stations, such that the precedence relations among the tasks are satisfied and some pel- hormarice measure (e.g. toLal idle tune; is opLimized- in this work, some heuristic methods are examined and compared for an 11-element assembly line balancing problem for fixed F-ratios and cycle times.
