This article covers the trip where Mikhail Gorbachev first visited Turkey in 1995 and the personal motivations behind this trip. The years 1985-1991, when he was on the crest of a wave as the last leader of the Soviet Union, are analyzed through the collapse of the Soviet Union, the result of Russian economic reforms, and how they laid the basis for Gorbachev's visitation to Turkey. Through this background, the article evaluates developments in Russian-Turkish relations, Yapı Kredi Bank's place in this relationship, the press conferences held, and Gorbachev's Turkey trip in general.
