dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstract1950 yılında Kuzey Kore'nin, Güney Kore'yi işgale başlamasının ardından Birleşmiş Milletler Güvenlik Konseyi Kuzey Kore'ye karşı askeri müdahalede bulunma kararı almıştır. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, Birleşmiş Milletler'in savaş çağrısına olumlu yanıt vererek savaşa katılma kararı almıştır. Bunun sonucunda 19 Ekim 1950'de ilk Türk Tugayı Kore'ye adımını atmıştır. Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri mensubu olan Osman Yaşar Eken de Kore'ye adım atan ve Kore'de savaşan Türk Tugayı'nın bir parçasıydı. Bu araştırmada Türkiye'nin Kore Savaşı öncesi durumu, Kore Savaşı'nın nedenleri, Osman Yaşar Eken'in gerek savaş öncesi gerek savaş sırasındaki anıları ve Kore Savaşı'nın kısa ve uzun dönem etkileri anlatılmıştır. Kore Savaşı'nı tam olarak özümseyebilmek için yaşananları doğrudan deneyimlemiş biri olan Osman Yaşar Eken'in anıları önem teşkil etmektedir. Gerçekten de Kore Savaşı'nda tecrübe edilen sıkıntılar ve savaş ortamı, Osman Yaşar Eken'in anılarında açıkça göze çarpmaktadır.
dc.description.abstractDue to the fact that North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, the United Nations Security Council has decided to take military action against North Korea. After that, the Republic of Turkey has agreed to the decision which implemented a military action to the North Korea and sent its first brigade on 19 October 1950. Osman Yaşar Eken, who was a member of the Turkish Armed Forces, also played a role in the Korean War. In this research, the status of Turkey before the war, the reasons of the Korean War, memories of Osman Yaşar Eken either before the war or during the war, lastly, short and long term effects of the Korean War will be assessed. The memories and expressions of Osman Yaşar Eken who directly experienced the whole war are significant in order to accurately understand the Korean War. So indeed, the atmosphere of the Korean War and distress that experienced during the war are clearly obvious on the memories of Osman Yaşar Eken.
