dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractİstanbul Boğazı, her yıl binlerce geminin geçtiği önemli bir ticari noktadır. Bu tür yerlerde gemi trafiği çok yoğun olmakla birlikte, tehlikeli bir hal de almaktadır. Bu tehlikeli durumlardan kaynaklanmış en çarpıcı örneklerden biri Independenta tanker kazasıdır. Bu kaza Kasım 1979’da Rumen bandıralı Independenta ile Yunan bandıralı Evriali gemisi arasında gerçekleşmiştir, can ve mal kaybının yanı sıra bu kazanın şiddeti ile çevredeki birçok ev ve tarihi Haydarpaşa Garı zarar görmüştür. Bu kazayı takip eden günlerde ise petrol sızıntısından dolayı denizde kirlilik meydana gelmiş ve gemi enkazının çevresinde irili ufaklı patlamalar yaşanmıştır. Bu kazanın diğer tanker veya gemi kazalarından ayrıldığı nokta ise enkazının yaklaşık 8 yıl boyunca kaldırılamamasıdır. Bu kazanın hukuki yaptırımları olmuş ve boğazdaki gemi trafiğinde değişikliklere gidilmiştir. Bu kaza boğaza yakın oturan insanların yaşantılarının büyük ölçüde değişmesinde önemli bir rol oynamıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractBosphorus, is an important commercial point where thousands of ships pass each year. For that, ship traffic is very intense in such places, therefore it becomes dangerous for ships and Bosphorus. One of the devastating example for this is the Independenta tanker accident. This accident took place between the Romanian flagged Independenta and the Greek-flagged Evriali in November 1979, as well as the loss of life and property, also with the severity of this accident, many houses around and the historic Haydarpaşa Train Station have been damaged. In the days following this accident, pollution occurred in the sea due to oil spill and explosions occurred around the shipwreck. The point where this accident is separated from other tanker or ship accidents is that it’s wreck cannot be removed for about 8 years. This accident has had legal sanctions and changes in ship traffic in the Bosphorus have been made. This accident played an important role in changing the lives of people living near the Bosphorus.en_US
