| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | |

| dc.description.abstract | Şahin Mengü, Türk siyasetinde ve hukuk dünyasında demokrasi, insan hakları ve hukukun üstünlüğü mücadelesiyle iz bırakmış önemli bir figürdür. 12 Eylül 1980 darbesi sonrası dönemde hukukun üstünlüğünü savundu, özellikle ifade ve basın özgürlüğü konularında kararlı bir duruş sergiledi. Hem avukatlık kariyerinde hem de milletvekilliği döneminde Türkiye'nin demokratikleşme sürecine katkıda bulundu, siyasi ve hukuki mücadeleleriyle toplumda geniş yankı uyandırdı. Avukatlık mesleği boyunca, çeşitli basın davalarında medya kuruluşlarının ve bireylerin haklarını savunarak ifade özgürlüğü için mücadele etti. Aynı zamanda 22. Dönem CHP Manisa Milletvekili olarak görev yapan Mengü hem yerel hem de ulusal ölçekte birçok önemli soruna dikkat çekti ve çözüm önerileri sundu. Hayatı boyunca Atatürkçü ve ulusalcı değerleri savunan Mengü, milletvekilliği sonrası dönemde de siyasi eleştirilerini sürdürmüş ve Aydınlık Gazetesi gibi mecralarda yazılar kaleme almıştır. 2021 yılında hayatını kaybeden Şahin Mengü, hukuk ve siyaset alanında bıraktığı izlerle Türk toplumu için önemli bir figür olarak anılmaktadır. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Şahin Mengü was a prominent figure in Turkish politics and the legal world, leaving a mark with his struggle for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Following the 1980 military coup, he stood firmly in defense of the rule of law, particularly advocating for freedom of expression and press freedom. Throughout both his legal career and parliamentary tenure, he contributed to Turkey's democratization process and made a significant impact on society through his political and legal struggles. Throughout his career as a lawyer, he fought for freedom of expression by defending the rights of individuals and media organizations in various press-related cases. Serving as a CHP Member of Parliament for Manisa during the 22nd legislative term, Mengü addressed numerous critical issues at both local and national levels, offering practical solutions. Dedicated to Kemalist and nationalist values throughout his life, Mengü continued to voice his political critiques even after his parliamentary tenure, penning articles in outlets such as Aydınlık newspaper.
