Life of women in the Ottoman Empire: A perspective of Henry Dwight

Bu araştırmada, Osmanlı Imparatorluğunda, geç ondokuzuncu ve yirminci yüzyıllarda yaşayan Türk kadınlarının yaşam tarzlarını ele aldık. Bu bağlamda, kadınların, o dönemin sosyetesindeki oynadığı rol, giyiniş tarzları, aldıkları eğitim, gibi konuları geniş bir spektrumda araştırdık. Hatta, sonrasında, bazı standartların sebeplerini anlatmaya çalıştık, bunlardan bir tanesi de Islam'dı. Birincil kaynağımız olarak Henry Otis Dwight'ın, 'Constantinople and its Problems' kitabını kullandık. Ancak, Dwight'ın kitabındaki bilgileri karşılaştırmak için de çokça kaynak kullandık ve bir sonuca ulaştık.

This research paper focuses on the lifestyle of the Turkish women of the Ottoman Empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Women’s role in all aspects have been researched on, such as their dressing, their public role and their education. We even try to get to the causes of some of the norms, one of which was Islam. We use Henry Otis Dwight’s book, Constantinople and its Problems as a Primary source. However, we use more sources in order to compare the information that was given by Dwight and come to a conclusion.
