dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractKafkasya tarih boyunca Ruslar için önemli bir bölge olmuştur. Rusya, sıcak denizlere inme politikası kapsamındabu bölgede yaşayan Kafkas halklarına zulmetmiştir. Halk Rusya'nın baskılarına karşı koymaya çalışsa da başarılı olamamıştır ve sonunda göç etmek zorunda kalmıştır. Koç (Kuekue) ailesi de göç eden ailelerden biridir. Şuayb (Koç) henüz küçük bir çocukken sürgünde ailesini kaybetmiştir ve Anadolu'ya yörenin önde gelenleriyle birlikte gelmiştir. Şuayb (Koç)'un oğlu Şevket Koç daha sonraları Mersin'e gelmiştir. Adana, Kayseri ve Kahramanmaraş gibi illerden bazı Çerkesler de Mersin'e göç etmiştir. Mersin'e gelen Çerkesler kendi aralarındaki yardımlaşma ve dayanışmaya önem vermişlerdir. Ortak değerler taşıyan bu insanlar kültürlerini yaşatmak amacıyla Şevket Koç'un önderliğinde 21 Mart 1969 yılında Mersin Kafkas Kültür ve Yardımlaşma Derneği'ni kurmuşlardır. Dernek günümüzde de aktif olarak faaliyetlerini sürdürmektedir.
dc.description.abstractThroughout history, Caucasus has been an important region for Russians. Russia has persecuted the Caucasian peoples living in this region within the scope of accessing to warm waters. Although the people tried to resist the oppression of Russia, they did not succeed and in the end they had to emigrate. The Koç (Kuekue) family is one of the immigrant families. Şuayb (Koç) lost his family as a young child during the exile and came to Anatolia with some notable people of the region. Şevket Koç, the son of Şuayb (Koç), later came to Mersin. Some Circassians from provinces such as Adana, Kayseri and Kahramanmaraş migrated to Mersin as well. The Circassians who came to Mersin gave importance to the cooperation and solidarity among themselves.These people who share common values established Mersin Caucasus Culture and Solidarity Associationon March 21, 1969under Şevket Koç's leadershipin order to keep their culture alive. The Association continues its activities nowaday.
