NASA'da bir Türk mühendis: İsmail Akbay

Abstract

İsmail Akbay 17 Ekim 1930 yılında Bursa Mudanya’nın Tirilye köyünde dünyaya gelmiştir. Onu kayda değer yapan ise uzay çalışmalarının başarıya ulaşmasında oynadığı kritik rol ve NASA’da çalışmış ilk Türk bilim insanı olmasıdır. Yaşadığı tüm zorluklara rağmen asla pes etmemesi ve hep daha iyisini hedeflemesi, onun hayallerini gerçekleştirebilmesinin en büyük etmenidir. Tennessee Üniversitesinden başarılı bir şekilde mezun olması ve çalışma hevesi, ünlü roket bilimci Dr. Wernher Von Braun’un dikkatini çeker ve Akbay, Braun’un daveti ile Apollo 11 projesinde göreve başlar. Apollo 11 projesinde sağladığı katkılar ile insanlığın bilimde ilerlemesine büyük katkıları olan Akbay, daha sonrasında anavatanı olan Türkiye’de bir Uzay Kampı kurulmasının öncülüğünü yapmıştır. Uzay Kampı’nın kurulabilmesi için iş insanı Kaya Tuncer’i maddi açıdan destek vermeye ikna etmesi, aynı zamanda Türkiye’de bilimin gelişmesi ve ilerlemesi için ortaya koyduğu çabayı bizlere göstermektedir. İnsanlık tarihine sayısız katkılar sağlamış olan değerli bilim insanı Akbay, 2003 yılında evinde çıkan talihsiz yangında köpeğini kurtarmaya çalışması sonucunda dumandan zehirlenerek vefat etti.

İsmail Akbay was born on October 17, 1930, in the Tirilye village of Mudanya, Bursa. What makes him noteworthy is the critical role he played in the success of space studies and being the first Turkish scientist to have worked at NASA. Despite all the difficulties he has experienced, never giving up and always aiming for the better is the most significant factor in making his dreams come true. His successful graduation from the University of Tennessee and his enthusiasm for work led the attraction of the attention of famous rocket scientist Dr. Wernher Von Braun and Akbay started to work on the Apollo 11 project upon Braun's invitation. Here he also meets another valuable scientist, Arsev Eraslan, and they work together on the Apollo 11 project, even though they have worked in different fields. Akbay, who made great contributions to the advancement of humanity with his contributions to the Apollo 11 project, later pioneered the establishment of a Space Camp in his homeland, Turkey. Convincing businessman Kaya Tuncer to provide financial support for the establishment of the Space Camp also shows us his efforts to develop and advance science in Turkey. The esteemed scientist Akbay, who has made numerous contributions to the history of humanity, died in 2003 by being poisoned by smoke as a result of trying to save his dog in the fire that broke out in his house.
