dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstract12 Eylül 1980' de yaşanan askeri darbe ve getirdiği düzen, halk arasında birtakım tepkilere ve karşıt düşüncelerin doğmasına sebep olmuştur. Bu karşıt düşünceler doğrultusunda halkın bazı kesimleri dergi, gazete gibi araçlarla fikirlerini halka ulaştırmayı ve yaymayı amaçlamışlardır. Yeni Aşama dergisi de bu doğrultuda kurulan sosyalist bir gençlik dergisidir. Yayımladığı makalelerle, yazılarla insanların eşit fırsatlara sahip olunması gerektiği savunan bu dergi, altı ilde faaliyetlerini sürdürmüştür. Sadece siyasi düşünceleri kapsamakla kalmamıştır. Aynı zamanda derginin belli köşelerinde aşk, doğa şiirleri gibi edebi ürünlere de yer verilmiştir. 80'lerin düzenine boyun eğmeyen ve sosyalizmi savunan bu dergi, savunduğu düşünceler gereği o zamanlarda Kürtlere olan tutumun karşısında durmuştur. Bu durum devleti ve halkı bölmeye teşebbüs olarak görüldüğü için dergiye baskın yapılmış, bazı yazarlar ve yazı işleri müdürü gözaltına alınmıştır. Dergi bürosunun kapısına kilit vurulmuştur. Bu olaydan sonra derginin diğer şubelerinde birkaç sayı daha çıkartılmıştır fakat dergi içerisinde çıkan düşünce ayrılıkları sebebiyle derginin basımı durdurulmuştur. Dergi üyelerinden edinilen bilgilerden ve dergi hakkında yapılan gazete haberlerinden yararlanılarak derginin kuruluşu, işleyişi ve kapanma süreci anlatılacaktır.
dc.description.abstractAfter the military coup d'etat occurred in 1980, there were some contrary thoughts in the society about the new political system. People among public who embrace these contrary thoughts tried to spread their perspectives to public. Yeni Aşama was one of the periodicals which was published for this aim. It defended that people had to have equality of opportunity and equal living conditions. The periodical was active in six cities of Turkey. In addition to the political thoughts, literary materials such as poems regarding love and nature were included in the periodical. Being the strong defenders of socialism, they also defended the rights of the Kurdish people. This action was interpreted as an attempt to divide the union of state and public. Hence, a raid was carried out to office of the Yeni Aşama and several workers were arrested. One of the branches of the periodical was closed. Although other branches continued publishing; after publishing some issues they stopped because of the dissent occurred among periodical writers. By using information obtained from the workers of the periodical and reports made about the periodical, the process of Yeni Aşama's publication starting from establishment to end is going to be written in detail.
