Hamza Rüstem ve fotoğrafçılık

Abstract

Hamza Rüstem, Türkiye fotoğrafçılığının temellerini atmış ve Türkiye fotoğrafçılığına birçok yönden katkı sağlamıştır. Girit Kandiye’de doğdu, Osmanlı döneminde Bursa ve İstanbul’daki çok önemli okullarda eğitim aldı. Sürgün edildiği sırada yolu tekrar Girit’e yolu düştü ve fotoğrafçılıkla tanıştı. Girit’teyken ustası Bahaeddin Bediz’in İstanbul'a dönmesiyle dükkanı devraldı. Mübadele ile Türkiye'ye gelen Hamza Rüstem, İzmir’de atölye açtı. Girit'ten İzmir’e birlikte geldiği çalışanları da ilerleyen dönemlerde kendi atölyelerini açtılar. Bu döneme Giritli fotoğrafçılar dönemi denildi. İlerleyen dönemlerde İzmir Fotoğrafçılar Odasını kurdu. Yaşlanınca atölyesini ve şirketini oğullarına devretti. Torunu Mert Rüstem atölyeyi hâlâ işletmekte. Aynı zamanda Mert Rüstem Karşıyaka Belediyesinin desteğiyle 2011 yılında Hamza Rüstem Fotoğraf Evi ve Müzesini açtı.

Hamza Rustem is an essential person for Turkish photography. He was born in Crete Heraklion, studied in important schools in Bursa and Istanbul during the Ottoman Empire. During his exile, he returned to Crete and met photography. While in Crete, he took over the shop when his master Bahaeddin Bediz returned to Istanbul. Hamza Rustem came to Turkey with the exchange between Turkey and Greece, then opened his workshop in Izmir. The employees with whom he came from Crete to Izmir also opened their workshops in the following periods. This period was called the Cretan photographers period. Later, he established the Izmir Chamber of Photographers. When he got older, he transferred his workshop and company to his sons. His grandson Mert Rüstem still runs the workshop. Mert Rüstem also runs the Hamza Rüstem Photography House and Museum, which he opened in 2011.
