dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractSabiha Tansuğ, Anadolu tarihiyle kültürünün korunmasında, gelecek nesillere aktarılmasında kayda değer katkıları bulunan bir sanatçı, etnolog ve koleksiyoncudur. Anadolu yöresel giyimini yansıtan koleksiyonu pek çok farklı yerde ilgi görmüş ve sergilenmiştir. Bu mikrotarih çalışmasında kendisinin hayatının açtığı bu sergiler ve de kültür sanata yaptığı katkılar çerçevesinde incelenmiş ve sistematik bir biçimde kayıt altına alınması amaçlanmıştır. Öncelikle okura aile göçmen olarak Türkiye’ye gelen Tansuğ’un yetiştiği zaman ve çevreye yönelik bilgi verilirken sırasıyla çocukluğundan, eğitiminden, bir gazeteci olarak kariyerden bahsedilmiştir. Bu faktörlerin Tansuğ’un hayatına nasıl bir yön verdiği incelenmiştir. İlk parçası 1965 yılında Tansuğ’un eline geçen koleksiyon hem yurt dışında hem yurt içinde sergilenmiş, bu sırada koleksiyonunu da büyütmüştür. Makalenin bu bölümünde Fransa, Brüksel ve Japonya sergilerinin yanı sıra 1968 İstanbul Sergisi ve 1974 yılında at üzerinde düzenlenen İzmir defilesinden de bahsedilmiştir. Tansuğ’un koleksiyonu oluşturma ve büyütme aşamalarında arka planda yaşadığı zorluklar çalışmada işlenirken verdiği konferanslara da değinilmiştir. 1968 yılında İstanbul’da gerçekleşen sergisi tarihi bir dönüm noktası niteliğindedir çünkü Tansuğ’un gelinbaşı takan figürünün madeni paraya basılmasına olanak vermiştir. Böylece Tansuğ siyasi bir figür olmadığı halde paraya resmi basılan ilk kadın olarak adını tarihe geçirmiştir. 1974 yılına gelindiğinde Tansuğ koleksiyonunu bir müzeye dönüştürmek istemiş ama bu tasarısı dönemin kültür bakanınca reddedilmiştir. 2007 yılında vuku bulan bir hırsızlık sonucu koleksiyondan pek çok parça eksilmiştir. 2021 yılına yaklaşırken İzmir’de adına bir vakıf kuruluşu ve müze tasarısının bir kez daha ortaya sürülüşü ele alınmıştır. Bademler Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı’nın da katkılarıyla Sabiha Tansuğ Koleksiyonu’nun İzmir’in Urla ilçesinde açılacak yeni müzesinde sergilenmesi planlanıyor. Bir bütün olarak ele alındığında bu mikrotarih çalışması Tansuğ’un doğumundan bu araştırmanın yapıldığı tarihe yani 1933’ten 2021 yılına kadar Sabiha Tansuğ’un bir sanatçı, etnolog ve koleksiyoncu olarak hayatının kronolojik bir inceleme ve derlenmesini kapsamıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractSabiha Tansuğ is an artist, ethnographer, and collector who significantly contributed to the preservation, as well as conveyance, of Anatolian historical heritage and culture. This research paper aims to systematically document Tansuğ’s life with a specific focus on her said contributions and her exhibitions that reflect an authentic representation of the Anatolian past and way of life. This paper primarily supplies the viewer with brief background information regarding the upbringing of Tansuğ whose family migrated to Turkey. Her childhood, her education and her career as a journalist, as well as the way such factors had influenced Tansuğ later in her life, were inspected within the scope of the era. It was 1965 when Tansuğ had come across the first piece of her collection. The accumulating pieces were exhibited both within the borders of Turkey and in the international sphere. Throughout the main body of this paper, the exhibitions that took place in France, Brussels and Japan were described. Two domestic exhibits discussed in detail were the 1968 Istanbul Exhibit and the 1974 İzmir fashion show, since respectively the former was a milestone in Tansuğ’s life, eventually leading her figure to be printed on coin, and the latter was made on horseback. In 1974, Tansuğ’s proposal for a museum that will indefinitely exhibit her collection was met with a refusal from the Turkish Minister of Culture of the time. As the result of a robbery that took place in 2007, a significant amount of pieces were lost from the said collection. In the later parts of this article, the period following the robbery was divulged. Another solid attempt to turn her collection into a museum was only conducted years later. Said project belonged to a foundation directly related to the owner herself: the Sabiha Tansuğ Foundation in İzmir. This museum for the Sabiha Tansuğ Collection is planned to open its doors to the public in March 2022. Overall, this microhistorical study covered chronological documentation of a large period of Sabiha Tansuğ’s life, from 1933 to the date of this research, 2021, as an artist, ethnographer and collector.en_US
