The economic impact of the 1999 Marmara earthquake on Turkey

Abstract

The 1999 Marmara Earthquake had heavy consequences for the livelihood of thousands and significantly influenced the Turkish economy. While there have been many reports and research into its economic consequences both during and after the disaster, the current literature seems scattered. It does not provide a comprehensive report on the matter, with many works focused on one or two isolated factors rather than a wide variety of economic consequences that stemmed from the event. This paper will offer a more holistic coverage of this horrendous event in hopes of better understanding the economic ramifications in its totality by examining and synthesizing both local and international sources. 1999 Marmara Depremi, binlerce insanın geçim kaynakları üzerinde ağır sonuçlar doğurmuş ve Türkiye ekonomisini önemli ölçüde etkilemiştir. Felaketin ekonomik sonuçlarıyla ilgili olarak hem olay anında hem de sonrasında birçok rapor ve araştırma yapılmış olsa da, mevcut literatür dağınık bir yapıdadır. Bu çalışmaların çoğu, olayın yarattığı çok çeşitli ekonomik sonuçlar yerine yalnızca bir ya da iki etkene odaklanmaktadır. Bu makale, bu korkunç olayın ekonomik etkilerini daha iyi anlamak amacıyla, hem yerel hem de uluslararası kaynakları inceleyip sentezleyerek daha bütüncül bir bakış sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
