dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST209) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractWith the courtesy of the national demand for liberty, such as the resolutions of 24th January 1980 and the ratification of Turkey’s constitution of 1982, the airline liberalization initiated by the United States of America in 1978 stimulated Turkey to accede to the air transport deregulation in 1983. The airline liberalization intrinsically contributed to the further autonomy of private enterprises to operate in the airline industry and eliminated restrictions on pricing and routes. Accordingly, the airline industry rapidly gained momentum, fostering competition by establishing new airlines while offering unprecedentedly affordable prices and diverse destinations for tourist attractions. From 1980 until 1995, tourist arrival went up from 1.1 million to 7.1 million, and tourism receipts increased from $0.4 billion to almost $7 billion, marking the pinnacle of tourism within a decade. Considering the enthralling numbers seen, it is worth heeding how airline liberalization in 1983 played a key factor in the expansion of Turkey’s tourism sector, both internationally and domestically. Overall, this research paper aims to juxtapose the pre-existing economic structure before the airline liberalization with the economy after the deregulation to see whether its impact was prominent in the growth of the tourism sector within an entire decade following the implementation of airline liberalization.en_US
dc.description.abstract24 Ocak 1980 önergesi ve 1982 Türk anayasasının onaylanması gibi özgürlüğe yönelik ulusal taleplerin izniyle, ABD tarafından 1978’de Türkiye’de başlatılan havayolu serbestleştirmesi, 1983’te Türkiye’nin hava taşımacılığında özerkleşmesinde görev almasına teşvik etmiştir. Havayolu serbestleştirmesi esasen özel teşebbüslerin havayolu endüstrisinde çalışmasında daha fazla bağımsızlık kazanmasına katkı sağlamış ve ücretlendirme ve rotalar 3 bağlamındaki kısıtlamaları ortadan kaldırmıştır. Bununla birlikte havayolu endüstrisi süratle hız kazanmış, yeni havayolları kurarak rekabet oluştururken daha önce rastlanmamış makul ücretler ve turistlere yönelik çeşitli istikametler sunmuştur. 1980’den 1995’e kadar, gelen turist sayısında 1.1 milyondan 7.1 milyona kadar, turizmden kazanılan gelirde ise 0.4 milyar dolardan yaklaşık 7 milyara kadar bir artış göstererek onyıllık süreçte bir zirveye imza atmıştır. Bu yüksek sayılar ele alındığında, 1983 yılındaki havayolu serbestleştirmesinin Türkiye’nin turizm sektöründe yarattığı uluslararası ve yerli gelişmelerde kilit unsur olduğuna dikkat çekilmelidir. Bu araştırma makalesi, havayolu serbestleştirmesinden önceki eski ekonomiyi ve özerkleştirilmesinden itibaren oluşan ekonomiyi karşılaştırarak havayolu serbestleştirmesinin on yıllık süreçteki turizm sektörünün gelişimindeki etkilerinin önemini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.en_US
