dc.description.abstract | St. Pierre Church, located in Antakya district of Hatay, is the first cave church of the world and one of the earliest places of worship in Christianity. Under the leadership of St. Pierre, the Christian community escaping from the persecution held their gathering in the cave where the church is located, and the term “Christian” is used there for the first time. Over time, the cave was transformed into a church through architectural additions while protecting its natural structure. In 1963, the church was declared as a pilgrimage site. Today, the church is a significant heritage site both religiously and culturally and important for faith tourism. Its symbolic importance, architectural structure and influence on multicultural society in Antakya have gained it a universal value.
