The Champion of Feminism: Atatürk and the image of the modern Turkish woman

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kuruluşundan sonra, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, yeni cumhuriyetin refahını sağlamak için birçok reform yapmıştır. Bunların bazıları Türk kadınının toplumsal statüsünü yükseltmeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu makalede, Türk kadınının dünyadaki temsili ele alınacak ve sözkonusu reformların uluslararası alandaki yansımaları incelenecektir. Bununla beraber, Türk kadınının Osmanlı ve cumhuriyet dönemlerindeki yaşantısı karşılaştırılacak ve reformların sosyal yaşamda yarattığı değişiklikler gösterilecektir.

After the formation of the Turkish Republic, its founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk implement edvarious reforms to ensure the prosperity of the new Republic. Amongst these were reforms focused on elevating the status of the Turkish women. This paper will primarily focus on western perceptions about the modern Turkish woman as well as reactions in the international sphere. It will also contrast women’s lives between the Ottoman and the Republican period, showing how the societal structure changed thanks to these reforms.
