Poppy is a plant cultivated from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, and its products are used in various fields such as drug production and primarily in the pharmaceutical industry. Due to the use of its products in drug production, its cultivation has been regulated throughout history. However, in the 1970s, due to the increasing drug addiction in the United States, its production was temporarily banned in Turkey. Our research primarily examines how the ban on poppy, which was a significant harvest at that time, affected the economic and social aspects of farmers from Afyonkarahisar before the ban, during the prohibition process, and after the ban. This examination is conducted through an interview with Arif Yitik, a farmer from Afyonkarahisar, and various documents, aiming to analyze the political process between Turkey and America during this period.
