dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstract15 Şubat 1997'de gerçekleşen Şeriata Karşı Kadın Yürüyüşü doksanlı yılların anti-laik politikası ile kadının sosyal ve hukuki alanda geri kalmasına yönelik önemli tepkilerden biridir. Bu araştırmada öncelikle yürüyüşe zemin hazırlayan doksanlı yıllardaki siyasi, sosyal ve hukuki durumu anlatılmıştır. Yürüyüşte yaşananlar, yürüyüşün Tertip Komitesi Başkanı Şenal Sarıhan ve Tertip Komitesi üyesi olan Selma Çiçekçi ve yürüyüş katılımcılarından dönemin TBMM Başkan Vekili Uluç Gürkan ile yapılan röportaj sonucunda elde edilen bilgilerle ayrıntılı olarak anlatılmıştır. Röportajın yanı sıra dönemin gazete haberleri analiz edilerek yürüyüşe farklı ideolojilerden gelen tepkiler araştırılmıştır. Makalenin son kısmında yürüyüşün siyasal, toplumsal ve hukuki açıdan etkileri ele alınmıştır.
dc.description.abstractWomen's March Against Sharia which took place on February 15, 1997 is one of the important reactions to anti secular policy seen in 1990's and to women being behind in social and judicial areas. In this research, first of all, political, social and judicial conditions of 1990s' which paved the way for the march are examined. The events that took place during the march are explained in detail with the information obtained from the interviews with Şenal Sarıhan, the president of the Organization Committee of the march, Selma Çiçekçi, a member of the Organization Committee, and Uluç Gürkan, then-vice president of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) who participated in the march. Along with the interviews, the reactions to the march coming from different ideologies have been researched by analyzing the newspapers of the period. The last section of the research deals with the effects of the march in terms of politics, society and law.
