Marry ve Charlotte Türkiye’ye gelen misyoner gezginlerdi. Amerika’daki Mount Holyoke College’tan (Massachusetts) mezun olmalarının ardından, iki kıdemli misyoner olan Reverend George C. Knapp ve eşi Alzina Knapp ile tanışmaları, onları Bitlis’te misyonerlik yapmaya yönlendirdi. Kardeşlerin hevesleri, Ermeni kadınlara Amerikan tarzı eğitim sunan Mount Holyoke Kız İlahiyat Okulu ile sonuçlandı. Kız kardeşlerin, okul sürecinde, bölgedeki yetimlere yönelik sundukları çalışmalar, 19. yüzyılın sonlarında karşılaşılan gerek politik gerekse sosyolojik problemler açısından da büyük önem teşkil ediyordu.en_US
Mary and Charlotte Ely were early missionary travelers to Turkey. Upon their graduation from Mount Holyoke College of Massachusetts, USA, senior missionaries Reverend George C. Knapp and his wife Alzina Knapp persuaded them to adopt missionary life in Bitlis. The sisters’ passion resulted in founding Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in Bitlis, providing an American style education for the Armenian women. Their work at the Seminary was of particular importance in terms of the events related to the Ottoman socio-political climate in the late nineteenth century.en_US
