dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstract"Karadeniz'in incisi" olarak anılan Kırım; Avrupa'nın doğusunda, Karadeniz ile Azak Denizi'nin arasında bulunan, pek çok kültüre ev sahipliği yapmış bir yarımadadır. Bereketli topraklara ve stratejik bir konuma sahip olması sebebiyle tarih boyunca dikkatleri devamlı üzerine çekmiş, pek çok hânedanlığın hedef noktası olmuştur. İkinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında Sovyetler Birliği'ne bağlı olan Kırım'da; yiyecek, giyecek gibi pek çok temel tüketim malının temin edilememesiyle birlikte kıtlık boy göstermiş, Stalin'in sınıf çatışmalarına yol açan bölücü hareketleri yerel halkı yıpratmıştır. Sovyetlerin bu zayıflığı Almanya'nın merceğine girmiş, Almanya zaman kaybetmeden Kırım'ı işgal etmiştir. Tüm bu olayların merkezinde kalan Kırım Tatar asıllı Settarov ailesi, Kırım'ın bu denli zorlu koşulları altında yaşam mücadelesi veren ailelerden sadece birisidir. Kırım'ın ağır koşullarından dolayı gözleri arkada, ana vatanlarından göç etmek zorunda kalmış, Türkiye'ye doğru yola çıkmışlardır. Bu yolculukta; Simferopol'den Sevastopol'e, Odessa'dan Pryzemsyl'e, Neurippin'den tekrar Odessa'ya, Köstence'ye, Ossmanstedt'e, Graz'a ve daha türlü türlü şehre uğranmış, pek çok durak geçilmiştir. Settarovlar; zaman zaman göçmen kamplarında kalmış, iki yıl Hindelag'da çalışmışlardır. Yolculuğun sonlarına yaklaşırken Augsburg'da evrak işlemleri görmüş, Milano ve Cenova üzerinden Napoli limanına varmış ve en sonunda Türkiye'ye ulaşmışlardır. Türkiye'nin kötü durumdaki ekonomisine direnmiş, kendilerine yeni bir hayat kurmuşlardır. Bu çalışmada; Settarov ailesinin hayatta kalan son üyesi Nigar Tanatar'ın henüz 13 yaşındayken koptuğu memleketi Kırım'dan, Türkiye'ye kadar uzanan yolculuğu anlatılmaktadır.
dc.description.abstractCrimea, also known as "the pearl of the Black Sea", is a peninsula located at the eastern region of the Europe between Black Sea and Sea of Azov, which hosted many cultures throughout the history. Due to it strategical location and fertile lands it has always drawn attention and been targeted by many dynasties. During the Second World War, with the difficulties about supplying food and clothing, Crimea which was in the Soviet Union at that time suffered from famine, and also Stalin's divisive approach and resulting class conflictions weakened the local folk of Crimea. The weakness of the Soviet Union has been noticed by Germans and they occupied Crimea without losing any time. Settarov Family whom have found themselves at the center of these incidents, are only one of the families among many Crimean Tatars who survived at challenging conditions for their lives in Crimea. Caused by the compelling living conditions, with their mind full of concerns about their homeland, Settarova Family began their immigration journey from Crimea to Turkey. From Simferopol to Sevastopol, Odessa, Pryzemsyl, Neurippin, for the second time Odessa, Constanta, Ossmanstedt and Graz, Settarova Family have been to many different cities in this journey. Time to time, they had to survive in several migrant camps. After working in poor conditions at Hindelang for two years, they received their temporary passports in Ausburg. Over Milan and Genoa, they arrived at the Port of Naples and finally they arrived to Turkey. Settarov Family have stood against the insufficient economical possibilities of Turkey and built themselves a new life in here. In this article, the journey of Nigar Settarova, last alive member of Settarov family, from her beloved homeland Crimea which she lost connection at the age of 13 to Turkey has been studied.
