Abstract

We review experimental studies on left-handed metamaterials operating at microwave frequencies. Left-handed transmission is obtained from a composite metamaterial consisting of periodic split ring resonator and wire arrays. Phase measurements reveal that the left-handed metamaterial has a negative phase velocity and negative refraction. The negative index metamaterial is capable of imaging subwavelength features with a resolution of λ/8.
