| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | en_US |

| dc.description.abstract | Bu araştırma, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Fen Edebiyat Fakültesinin ilk kadın dekanı ve aynı zamanda üniversitenin ilk kadın rektörü olan Prof. Dr. Ayşe Soysal’ın akademik ve idari kariyerini, Türkiye’deki akademik cinsiyet eşitliği bağlamında incelemektedir. 1971 yılında daha sonradan Boğaziçi Üniversitesi olacak olan Robert Koleji Yüksekokulundan fizik ve matematik çift anadal diplomasıyla ayrılan Soysal, lisansının ardından matematik alanında ilerlemeye karar verdi ve 1973 yılında, Fulbright bursu ile ABD’ye giderek Michigan Üniversitesinde yüksek lisansını tamamladı. Bundan üç sene sonra ise aynı üniversiteden doktora derecesini alıp Türkiye’ye döndü ve Boğaziçi Üniversitesinde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaya başladı. Bu makale, Ayşe Soysal’ın kişisel deneyimlerinden yola çıkarak, Türkiye’nin bu konuda görece daha başarılı olan ülkelere kıyasla akademik cinsiyet eşitliğindeki durumunu ortaya koymayı; bilim, mühendislik alanlarında kadınların temsilinin yetersizliğine değinmeyi ve de özellikle söz konusu akademik idare olduğunda kadınların yaşadığı zorlukları göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. | |
| dc.description.abstract | This research examines the academic and administrative career of Prof. Dr. Ayşe Soysal, who is the first female dean of the Faculty of Literature and Science at Boğaziçi University as well as the university’s first female rector, regarding a context of gender equality in Turkish academia. Soysal, who graduated from Boğaziçi University, which was called Robert College at the time, with a dual major in physics and mathematics in 1971, decided to pursue her further academic career in mathematics. In 1973, owing to a Fulbright scholarship, she went to the USA and completed her master’s degree at the University of Michigan. Three years later, after completing her doctorate degree from the same institute, she returned to Turkey and began working as a faculty member at Boğaziçi University. This article aims to highlight Turkey’s status in academic gender equality in comparison to countries that show relatively better success in this regard. It seeks to address the inadequate representation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as well as the challenges women face in academic administration. | |
