This research paper depicts how Turkish theatre has evolved since the 1920s. The main focus of this paper is Afife Jale, the first Muslim stage actress in Turkish theatre. Afife Jale was active in the acting industry from the 1920s to 1940s. During this period, the newly found Republic of Turkey began shifting from a conservative society to a secular one under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Using primary and secondary resources about Afife Jale’s life, our paper shows how Afife Jale might have served as a ‘poster child’ in Atatürk’s reforms towards Muslims and women after the Ottoman period.en_US
