Women’s museums, as platforms that assess and present the role of women in history, and have the goal of increasing public awareness in order to solve current day problems faced by women, are a significant part of women’s movements that aim for gender equality. The first women’s museum in Turkey, titled the 1988 Geçici Modern Kadın Müzesi, was created by the feminist leaders of the time for similar reasons. This first attempt at a women’s museum was only open for a week, and it is the only women’s museum that had been opened in Turkey until the Istanbul Women’s Museum was formed in 2012. No other attempts were made at opening a women’s museum in the time period between the formation of these two museums. This study aims to understand why there is a 24 year gap between the formation of these two museums by assessing the women’s movements and museology understanding of the time, how they changed and evolved, and their interactions with each other.
