| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | |

| dc.description.abstract | Bu makalede vicdani ret kavramı ve Türkiye tarihindeki yeri incelenmektedir. Giriş bölümünde vicdani reddin dünya tarihindeki örnekleri incelenerek vicdani ret kavramının çıkışına değinilmiştir. Türkiye anayasasında zorunlu askerliğin, vicdani reddin durumundan ve vicdani ret açıklamasında bulunan insanların maruz kaldığı yaptırımlardan bahsedildi. Makalenin ilerleyen kısımlarında Türkiye'de vicdani reddin ortaya çıkışı, sivil ölüm kavramı ve süreçte yaşananlar o yıllarda İzmir Savaş Karşıtları Derneği'nin başkanlığını yapan ve reddi sebebiyle 701 gün hapis yatan Osman Murat Ülke ile yapılan röportaj esas kaynak alınarak incelendi. Süreçte aktif rol oynamış derneklerin ve basın organlarının kamuoyu oluşturmadaki etkilerine değinildi. | |
| dc.description.abstract | In this article, conscientious objection and its place in Turkey's history is being investigated. In prologue, emergence of conscientious objection is touched upon by analyzing first examples in human history. Position of compulsory military service and conscientious objection in Turkish constitution, and sanctions imposed upon conscious objectors are mentioned. In the body paragraphs emergence of conscious objection in Turkey, notion of civil death and events that occurred in the process are analyzed by using interview carried out with Osman Murat Ülke as reference who had presided İzmir Savaş Karşıtları Derneği in those years and served for 701 days because of his objection. Effects of associations and press organs which had taken an active role in the process on molding public opinion are mentioned. | |
