dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstract15 Eylül 1914’te Adana’nın Ceyhan ilçesinde doğan Orhan Kemal (Mehmet Râşit Öğütçü) Türk edebiyatında toplumcu gerçekçi ve gözleme dayalı romancılığın/hikayeciliğin en önemli isimlerinden biridir. Özellikle Çukurova bölgesinde Osmanlı sonrası yeniden yaşama dönmeye çalışan köylünün ve kırsaldan büyük şehre göç eden işçi sınıfının sorunlarını eserlerinde konu edinmiştir. Orhan Kemal’in Adana ve İstanbul’da hayatını yoğun bir şekilde geçirmiş olması ve ailesiyle beraber yaşadığı sorunlar, kendi çocukluğunda çektiği sürgün hayatının da etkisiyle edebi kişiliğinin oluşmasını sağlamıştır. Orhan Kemal’in ayrıca edebi kimliğiyle bağlı olduğu siyasi kimliği hayatında yaşadığı sorunların merkezini oluşturmuştur. Siyasi kimliğinin oluşumunda ise babası Abdülkadir Kemali Öğütçü ve Bursa hapishanesinde tanıştığı Nazım Hikmet önemli rol oynamıştır. Bu ilişkilerden doğan edebiyatı olumlu-olumsuz tepkilere maruz kalmış, toplumun farklı kesimleri tarafından hem sahiplenilmiş hem de bilerek göz ardı edilip durdurulmaya çalışılmıştır. Sanatçının vefatından sonra dahi ailesi, mirasından ötürü zorluklar çekerken temsil ettiği kesimden saygı ve sevgi görmüşlerdir.
dc.description.abstractOrhan Kemal (Mehmet Râşit Öğütçü), is one of the most significant figures in Turkish literature known for his social realism and observational writing, was born on September 15, 1914, in the Ceyhan district of Adana. His works often address the struggles of peasants attempting to rebuild their lives in the post-Ottoman Çukurova region and the challenges faced by the working class migrating from rural areas to urban cities. Orhan Kemal’s formative experiences, including his intense life in Adana and Istanbul and the hardships endured along with his family, notably his own childhood exile, shaped his literary identity. His political identity, closely related with his literary persona, was at the core of many of his life’s difficulties. Influential figures in his political development were his father, Abdülkadir Kemali Öğütçü, and the renowned poet Nazım Hikmet, whom he met in Bursa prison. The literature born from these relationships elicited both positive and negative reactions, embraced by some segments of society while deliberately ignored and suppressed by others. Even after his death, his family faced challenges due to his legacy, although they received respect and affection from the community he represented.
