dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractModern dans, 20. yüzyılın başlarında Almanya ve Amerika’da gelişmiş bir dans formudur. Klasik balenin akademik niteliğine ve katı kurallarına tepki olarak ortaya çıkmış ve yaygınlaşmıştır. Türkiye’de modern dansın konumundan bahsedilirken de Geyvan McMillen, bu alanda önde gelen isimlerinden biri olarak bilinir. Türkiye’de modern dansın öncülerinden biri olan McMillen, Türk balerin, koreograf ve sanat yönetmenidir. Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesinde Modern Dans Programı’nın ve Cemal Reşit Rey Dans Tiyatrosu Topluluğunun da kurucusudur. Ankara Devlet Balesi ve İstanbul Devlet Balesinde de birçok çalışmalar yürütmüştür. Türkiye’de Uluslararası Birinci Europalya ve Birinci Habitat Organizasyonlarının Dans Direktörlüğü’nü üstlenmiştir. Klasik baleden modern dansa evrilen sanat hayatı, birçok Türk dansçının kariyerine de katkı sağlamıştır. Bu araştırmada Geyvan McMillen’ın 1952 yılında Hacettepe Üniversitesi Devlet Konservatuvarını kazanmasıyla başlayan klasik bale eğitiminden, onun modern dansa ilgi duymasıyla başlayıp şekillenen koreograflık kariyeri, kurucusu olduğu topluluklar, sanat yönetmenliği ve Türkiye’de modern dansın gelişimi için kendini adadığı bu yolda karşılaştığı zorluklar anlatılmaktadır. Sanat hayatı, kendisiyle ilgili yazılmış makalelerden, kişisel arşivinden ve kendisiyle gerçekleştirilmiş röportajdan yararlanılarak Türkiye’ye sunduğu katkıları göstermek üzere aktarılmıştır.
dc.description.abstractModern dance emerged in the early 20th century in Germany and America as a response to the rigid rules of classical ballet. In Turkey, Geyvan McMillen is a renowned figure in the modern dance scene, recognized for her pioneering work in the field. As a Turkish ballerina, choreographer, and art director, she founded the Modern Dance Program at Yıldız Technical University and the Cemal Reşit Rey Dance Theatre Company. McMillen has also collaborated on numerous projects with Ankara State Ballet and Istanbul State Ballet and served as the Dance Director of the First International Europalya and First Habitat Organizations in Turkey. The transition from classical ballet to modern dance has paved the way for many Turkish dancers' success. This study explores McMillen's classical ballet background, which started when she enrolled in Hacettepe University State Conservatory in 1952, her career as a choreographer, her organizations' founding, her artistic direction, and the challenges she experienced while promoting modern dance in Turkey. The research draws on articles written about her, her archives, and an interview with McMillen to demonstrate her contributions to Turkey.
