The presence of Turks in the Balkans dates back to much earlier times, and the Turkish population increased in this region after the dominance of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. As a result of the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878, the Ottoman Empire lost much of its dominance in the Balkans, which led to the establishment of nation-states, including Bulgaria. Muslim Turks who lived in the borders of Bulgaria and preserved their identities were seen as a threat by the Bulgarians, who aimed to establish a nation-state. Various policies were formulated for their assimilation, and most of the Turks who were exposed to assimilation had to leave their homeland. In this context, the migration that occurred in 1989 has the feature of being the largest migration in Europe. The Girgin family is one of the families that participated in this forced migration and came to Turkey. This study examines the origins of the Girgin family in Bulgaria, the repressions they experienced as Muslim Turks, their migration process, and their life and adaptation progress in Turkey.
