Kalandar is a special day celebrated on the 14th of January annually around Eastern Karadeniz. In the Eastern Black Sea region it is celebrated with traditions such as pouring water around the house, welcoming visitors, and wearing costumes. Kalandar tradition with its thousands of years of history and tradition has evolved to survive, yet it was able to protect the essence of itself. Because of its meaning for the locals unlike similar traditions in Anatolia, it hasn’t got lost in history. This essay aims to investigate the reasons behind this phenomenon. The paper aims to observe the differences between Kalandar by understanding the sentimental meaning of the tradition, and its place in historical progress and by comparing the tradition with other traditions in the same region.
