dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST209) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBu Makale, “Jonas King’in misyoner teknikleri, Filistin ve Yunanistan, iki farklı toplumda ne ile nasıl sonuçlandı?” sorusunu ele alıyor. Bu yazıda, öncelikle ABCFM ve Jonas King hakkında kısa bilgiler verilecektir. Makale onun misyoner faaliyetlerini ilişkide olduğu toplumlarda- Yahudilerle, Rumlarla, Araplarla ve Türklerle, incelemeye çalışacaktır. Bu aktivitelerin yanı sıra onun kullandığı teknikler de tartışılacaktır. Ayrıca, “mere-exposure” etkisi ile gözlem ve uyum süresinin önemi de incelenecektir. Bu makaledeki analizler kronolojik olarak vurgulanıp, önce 1822-27 arasında ve daha sonra 1828-32 arası Osmanlı Yunanistan'ında Filistin'i ele alacak şekilde açıklanacaktır. Yunanistan'ın Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndan kurtuluş kazanması nedeniyle, 1832'den sonraki faaliyetleri dikkate alınmayacaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThis paper considers a question “How did Jonas King’s missionary techniques result in two different realms- in Palestine and Greece?”. The fact that Dr. King was one of the first three remarkable ABCFM missionaries in the Ottoman Empire territory. In this paper, firstly brief information about ABCFM and Jonas King is given. Then it will be explained how Jonas King joined ABCFM. The paper will attempt to examine his missionary activities in societies he associated with- Jews, Greek, Arabs and Turkish. The techniques, as well as results of these activities will be discussed. Also, through mere-exposure effect, the importance of his observation and compliance period will also be analyzed. The analysis in this paper will be highlighted, and explained chronologically, firstly considering Palestine in between 1822-27 and then Ottoman Greece between 1828-32. His activities after 1832 will not be considered, as Greece won liberation from the Ottoman Empire.en_US
