dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractUSS Gwin muhribi 1972 yılında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti tarafından Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nden satın alındı. USS Gwin Türkiye’ye geldikten sonra, çanakkale Savaşı’ndaki ünlü “Muavenet-i Milliye” gemisinin anısına, TCG Muavenet adını aldı. TCG Muavenet zırhlısı hizmetlerine 1992 yılına kadar aralıksız devam etti. 1992 yılının Ekim ayında bir NATO tatbikatı olan “Display Determination - 92” ( Kararlılık Göstergesi - 92) tatbikatında Amerikan USS Saratoga uçak gemisi tarafından iki adet “Sea Sparrow” ( Deniz Serçesi) ile vuruldu. Vurulma sonucunda, TCG Muavenet mürettebatından 5 kişi hayatını kaybetti ve 22 kişi yaralandı. Olay Amerika tarafından kaza olarak nitelendirildi. “Sea Sparrow” füzelerinin yapısı ve olay öncesi Amerika - Türkiye ilişkileri, olayın kaza olmadığını düşündürmektedir. Olay sonrasında Türkiye tarafından Amerika’dan 8 adet tazminat olarak Knox sınıfı muhrip alınmıştır. Olayın halen çözüme kavuşturulmamış oluşu olayı incelenmeye değer kılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada olayın öncesi, arka planı, sonrası ve süregelen etkileri; gazetelerin, belgesellerin, raporların, belgelerin yardımıyla ve Meftun Dirman ve Mustafa İlter özdil’in röportajlarıyla incelenmiştir.en_US
dc.description.abstractTurkish Government bought USS Gwin Destroyer from USA in 1972. Upon being transported to Turkey, USS Gwin has been named “TCG Muavenet”, after the famous battleship of Gallipoli Campaign “Muavenet-I Milliye”. TCG Muavenet had not ceased to service till 1992. In October 1992, TCG Muavenet was hit by aircraft carrier USS Saratoga with two Sea Sparrow torpedoes in “Display Determination – 92” drill. Five people from TCG Muavenet’s crew has lost their lives and twenty two was injured. The incident recorded as an accident by US Government. The structure of the Sea Sparrow torpedoes and the conflict between the two countries was indicating a different story. After the incident, Turkish government took 8 Knox class destroyer as compensation from the USA. The incident has not solved hence is worth to investigate. In this paper, the story behind the incident and its outcomes has been investigated with the help of newspapers, documentaries, incident reports, documents and interviews with Meftun Dirman and Mustafa özdil.en_US
