dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBu makalede, Antik Çağlardan beri varlığını sürdüren, Türkiye'de özellikle Cumhuriyet döneminde etkisini gösteren ve dünyanın farklı yerlerinde birçok insanın ölümüne sebep olmasıyla büyük önem taşıyan sıtma hastalığının nasıl bulaştığı, hangi bölgelerde, neden daha sık görüldüğü, Türkiye üzerindeki etkileri ve mücadele yöntemleri ele alınmaktadır. Ateşli bir hastalık olan ve dişi anofel sivrisinekleri aracılığıyla bulaşan sıtma hastalığı, hem halkın hem de devletin ekonomisi ve sosyo-kültürel yapısı üzerinde büyük etkiler yaratmıştır. Sıtma hastalığıyla etkin mücadele adına Türkiye'de önemli yasal düzenlemeler yapılmış ve mücadele merkezleri kurulmuştur. Ekrem Yiğiter'in anılarından yola çıkılarak sıtma hastalığının Polatlı ve bölge halkı üzerindeki etkisi yakından incelenmiştir.
dc.description.abstractIn this article, the spread of malaria which is a disease that has existed since antiquity and has significantly affected Turkey especially during the Republican period as well as other places over the world causing the deaths of many people is discussed in addition to the following points: The regions where malaria is detected considering the factors playing role in the spread of the disease, the effects of malaria on Turkey and the policies that implemented to combat the disease. Malaria, a febrile illness transmitted by female anopheles mosquitoes, had great impacts on both the community and the socio-cultural structure and the economy of the state. Legislative regulations have been made and organisations have been established to combat disease effectively. Based on the memories of Ekrem Yiğiter, who served as a malaria eradication chief, effects of the disease on Polatlı and on local people are closely examined.
