The current study examines the effects of the Bulgaria-Turkey Forced Migration that took place in 1989 on the identity awareness of Turkish military personnel in Bulgaria. The impact of assimilation and discrimination policies applied to Turks living as a minority in Bulgaria on the daily life of Turks is also within the scope of the study. Within the project's scope, interviews were conducted with Turks who immigrated from Bulgaria and immigrants with different military service experiences in Bulgaria and Turkey. The findings reveal the increase in the sense of belonging to the Turkish identity due to the foreignness felt by soldiers who were discriminated against during their military service in Bulgaria and the identity conflict of those who were discriminated against. While the study notes that assimilation policies and identity-oriented discrimination continue to affect the lives of immigrants socially, culturally, and psychologically during and after the migration process, it also offers an analysis of the adaptation process to Turkey.
