dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBiyolojik cinsiyet, cinsel organlara göre insanları kadın ve erkek olmak üzere ikiye ayırır. Toplumsal düzen ve sosyal roller biyolojik cinsiyetimiz üzerinden belirlenir. Cinsel kimlik ise toplumda bireylerin kendilerini diğer insanlara –feminenlik ve maskülenlik bağlamında- nasıl aktardığıyla ilgilidir. Cinsel kimlik, biyolojik cinsiyetten farklı olabilir ve bu duruma transseksüalizm adı verilir. Bu araştırma, devlet toplum ve medya üzerinden Türkiye’de trans bireylere olan bakış açısının tarihi süreç içerisinde nasıl ve neden değiştiğini incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu araştırmada, Milliyet ve Hürriyet Gazetelerinin arşivleri, konuyla ilgili makaleler, trans bireylere ait anı kitapları, 1961 doğumlu, trans birey LGBT’li aktivist Demet Demir’in röportajları kullanılmıştır. 80’lerden 90’ların sonuna kadarki süreçte devlet, toplum ve medyanın trans bireylere karşı giderek daha ılımlı yaklaştığı gözlemlenmiştir.en_US
dc.description.abstractBiological genders divide individuals into two categories as female and male. The social order and roles are identified according to biological genders. The sexual identities are about in which way individuals prefer to express themselves femininely or masculinely. The sexual identity can differ from the biological gender and it is called transsexualism. This study aims to examine how the historical process of the approach to transsexualism has changed in Turkey considering the relationship between trans individuals and the state, the society and the media. In this research, archives of Milliyet and Hürriyet newspapers, articles on the subject, memoirs of trans individuals, interviews of transgender, LGBT activist Demet Demir are used. Between 1980 and 2000, it is observed that the state, society and the media were becoming more and more moderate towards transgender individuals.en_US
