dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractProf. Dr. Gönül hiçsönmez 1937 yılında dünyaya geldi. Ankara üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinden mezun olduktan sonra Amerika’da kanser üzerine araştırmalar yaptı. Türkiye’ye döndükten sonra da Hacettepe üniversitesi çocuk Hastalıkları Bölümünde çalıştı. Kariyeri boyunca erken yaşta çocuklarda görülen kan hastalıkları hakkında araştırmalar yaptı. Bu araştırmalarına yön veren hastalık ise Löseminin bir tipi olan Akut Miyebolastik Lösemi (AML) oldu. Hiçsönmez, yeni bir tedavi yöntemi olarak hastaya verilen yüksek dozda steroidin bu tipteki AML’yi tamamen iyileştirdiğini keşfetmiştir. Böylece tıbba bir yön vererek bu yöndeki araştırmaların önünü açmıştır. Bu araştırmada Gönül Hiçsönmezin hayatını ve AML’ye yeni bir tedavi yöntemi bularak tıbba nasıl bir katkıda bulunduğu anlatılmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractProfessor Dr. Gonul Hiçsönmez was born in 1937. After graduating from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine she began to conduct a research on cancer in the United States of America. After returning to Turkey, she worked at the Hacettepe University Department of Pediatrics. During her career, she did researches on blood diseases seen in children at early ages. Acute Myalogic Leukemia (AML) which is a type of leukemia was her particular research area. In return for her efforts, she discovered that a high dose of steroid given to the patient as a new treatment method completely heals this type of AML. Thus, Prof. Hiçsönmez gave direction to the process of treatment of the AML and led the way for the future scientists. In this research, Gönül Hiçsönmez's life and discovery of a new treatment method for AML has been explained.en_US
