dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST209) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractGrace Highley Knapp, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda Amerikan misyoneri olarak 22 yıl çalıştı. Orada geçirdiği zamanda birçok olaya tanıklık etti ve bunlar hakkında 2 kitap yazdı. Bu belgenin amacı Knapp’ın yazdıkları ve başka ikincil kaynakların ışığında, savaş esnasında Van ve Bitlis’te yaşayan Ermeni insanların öldürülmesini açıklamaktadır. Ayrıca bu belge Grace Knapp’ın öğretmenliği ve misyonerliği sırasındaki rolüne ve katkılarına da odaklanacaktır. Bu yazı aynı zamanda Grace Knapp gibi misyonerlerin bu olayı Türkler ve Ermeniler açısından nasıl yorumladığını ele almaktadır. Bunun dışında bu yazı Grace Knapp’in rolünden de kısaca bahsetmektedir. Grace Kanpp’in öğretmenlik ve misyonerlik yaptığı dönemde yapmış olduğu bağışlar da bahsedilmektedir.en_US
dc.description.abstractGrace Highley Knapp worked as an American missionary in the Ottoman Empire for 22 years. During her time there, she witnessed many events and wrote two books about them. In the light of her writings and other secondary sources this paper’s aim is to describe the events of the war in Van and Bitlis where many Armenian people were killed. Besides, this research paper focuses on how the missionaries, especially Grace Knapp interpreted those events and what her interpretation tells us about the missionaries’ attitudes towards the Turkish and Armenian people in general. This paper will also focus a little bit on the role of Grace Knapp as a teacher and the contributions she made to the regions where she taught.en_US
