dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractProf. Dr. Türkan Akyol, Türk siyasetinde ve akademik çevresinde üstlendiği önemli roller ve yaptığı katkılar ile bilinen değerli bir akademisyen ve siyasetçidir. Cumhuriyet’in ilk kadın bakan ve ilk kadın rektör ünvanını taşıyan Türkan Akyol, başta siyasetçi kimliği ile döneminde ilkleri hayata geçirmiş, sonrasında da akademiye pek çok katkıda bulunmuştur. Hayatını göğüs hastalıkları asistanı olarak devam ettiriyor iken, kendisinin de beklemediği bir şekilde Nihat Erim Kabinesi desteğiyle siyasete girmiştir. öncelikle 1971’de Sağlık ve Sosyal Yardım Bakanlığı, sonrasında Erdal İnönü’nün kuruculuğunu üstlendiği SODEP Genel Başkan Yardımcılığı görevini üstlenmiştir. 18. ve 19. Dönem TBMM milletvekilliklerinde bulunan Türkan Akyol, 49. Süleyman Demirel Hükümeti’nde 1991- 1993 Kadın Statüsünden Sorumlu Devlet Bakanlığı ve 50. Tansu çiller Kabinesi’nde de 1993- 1995 Kadın ve çocuktan Sorumlu Devlet Bakanlığı görevlerinde yer almıştır Bunların yanısıra kendi mesleğiyle ve hayat görüşüyle yakından ilgili Verem Savaş Derneği, Göğüs Hastalıkları ve Fizyolojisi Derneği ve Dünya Sağlık örgütü Avrupa Onursal üyelikleri de yapmış olan Türkan Akyol, Sosyalist Enternasyonal Kadınları şube Başkan Yardımcılığı görevini de üstlenmiştir.en_US
dc.description.abstractProfessor Dr. Türkan Akyol is a well-known scholar and politician known for her significant roles and contributions to Turkish politics and academic environment. Türkan Akyol, who was the first female minister and the first female rector of the Turkish Republic, firstly implemented the firsts with the identity of a politician and later contributed to the academic field. While she was continuing her life as an assistant of pulmonology, she involved politics with the support of Nihat Erim Cabinet. First, she was the minister of health and social security in the cabinet of Nihat Erim in 1971, vice chairman of SODEP founded by Erdal İnönü. Türkan Akyol, who was a member of the 18th and 19th parliamentary, served as the Minister of State for Woman and Family Affairs between 1993 and 1995, in the government of Suleyman Demirel. She had honorary memberships of Tuberculosis Control Association, Chest Diseases and Physiology Association, WHO Europe she also had taken vice president responsibility of the Socialist International Woman Branch.en_US
