dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractYaklaşık elli yıldır Osmanlı İmparatorluğu idaresinde kalan Bulgaristan, bağımsızlığını kazandıktan sonra ülkesi sınırları içinde yaşayan Türklere karşı uzun yıllar baskı ve asimilasyon politikaları yürütmüştür. Bulgaristan'ın 1984-1989 yılları arasında kendilerine uyguladığı bu politikalarından kaçmak zorunda bırakılan Bulgar Türkleri 1989 yılında Türkiye’ye göç etmiştir. Selçuk Barış da binlerce göç eden Bulgar Türkünden yalnızca biridir. Bu makalede, Bulgaristan Türklerini göç etmeye iten sebepler, Bulgaristan’ın uyguladığı asimilasyon politikaları dâhilinde ele alınmıştır. Göç dalgası ve sonrasında yaşananlar, 1989 senesinde Türkiye’ye gelen Selçuk Barış, Bulgar ismi ile Emiliyan Yuliyanov Manolov, ve ailesinin gözünden incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonunda, Barış ailesinin hikâyesiyle 1989 yılında yaşanan bu göç olayı ve sonrasındaki süreç hakkında yeni bilgilere ulaşılması hedeflenmiştir.en_US
dc.description.abstractHaving remained under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for nearly fifty years, Bulgaria, after gaining its independence, pursued a policy of pressure and assimilation against the Turks living within the borders of its country for many years. Bulgarian Turks fled from the policies applied to them in the years 1984-1989 emigrated to Turkey in 1989. Selçuk Barış is only one of the thousands of Bulgarian immigrants. In this article, the reasons that lead the Bulgarian Turks to immigrate are discussed within the scope of the assimilation policies implemented by Bulgaria. The migration process and what happened afterwards are examined from Selçuk Barış, Emilian Yuliyanov Manolov which is his Bulgarian name, and his family who came to Turkey in 1989. At the end of the research, it is aimed to reach new information about this migration incident that took place in 1989 and the aftermath with the story of the Barış family.en_US
