dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractAhmed Şefik Midhat Pasha was one of the leading statesmen in the Ottoman Empire in the mid 19th century, whose reforms and ideologies had left their permanent marks on the Ottoman Empire; marks which can even be seen today. This research paper will aim to investigate Midhat Pasha’s influence on the Ottoman Empire throughout his numerous governorships, vizierates, the constitution, relations with international powers, and even interactions with the sultans. Furthermore, we will consequentially prove Midhat Pasha was successful in giving his beliefs a solid form, which inevitably resulted in firm governance and reforms that had an unshaken foundation. Additionally, getting an opportunity to interview his direct descendant would help us get to know more about Midhat Pasha himself, and some of his other traits which may have been left unadhered to by history, but well-known by his progeny.en_US

Yüzyılın ortalarında Ahmet Şefik Mithat Paşa reformlarıyla ve ideolojileriyle Osmanlı İmparatorluğu üzerinde kalıcı ve günümüzde bile fark edilen etkiler bırakmış, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun ileri gelen devlet adamlarından biridir. Bu araştırmada amaçlanan, Mithat Paşa'nın yaptığı birçok valilik, vezirlik, anayasa, uluslararası güçlerle olan görüşmeler ve Padişah ile yaptığı görüşmeler doğrultusunda Mithat Paşa'nın Osmanlı İmparatorluğu üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Ayrıca, Mithat Paşa'nın kendi inançlarını hayata geçirdiğini, uyguladığı sıkı yönetim ve sarsılmaz bir dayanağı bulunan reformları üzerinden kanıtlayacağız. Buna ek olarak, Mithat Paşa'nın soyundan gelen birisiyle görüşme yapmış olmak, onun tarihe geçmemiş fakat ailesi arafından oldukça iyi bilinen bazı diğer özelliklerini açığa çıkarma fırsatını verdi.en_US
