Yusuf Ahmet Kulca ve Umut Çocukları Derneği̇

Abstract

Yusuf Ahmet Kulca’nın yaşam hikayesi, Türkiye’de sokakta yaşamak zorunda kalan çocuklara yönelik sivil toplum çalışmalarının gelişimini anlamak açısından önemli bir örnek sunar. Uygur-Sincan’dan Keşmir’e, ardından Türkiye’ye uzanan göç yolculuğu ve çocukluk yıllarında yaşadığı travmalar onu bir sosyal adalet mücadelecisi haline getirmiştir. 1980’li ve 1990’lı yıllarda sokakta yaşarken gözlemlediği sorunları medya sayesinde görünür kılmış, sonrasında da Umut Çocukları Derneği’ni kurarak çamaşırhane, gece barınağı ve “İlk Adım İstasyonu” gibi öncü projelere imza atmıştır. Bu araştırma, söz konusu projelerin sahadaki etkilerini ve kamuoyundaki algı değişimine katkılarını incelemektedir. Röportajlar, gazete haberleri, sivil toplum raporları ve akademik kaynaklardan yararlanılarak hazırlanan çalışma, derneğin karşılaştığı toplumsal direnç ve finansal zorluklara da odaklanmaktadır. Azalan maddi destek nedeniyle görevinden ayrılan Kulca, mücadelesini bireysel düzeyde sürdürmüş; üretim temelli sosyal girişimler ve farkındalık projeleriyle çocuklara destek olmayı sürdürmüştür. Kulca’nın hikâyesi, bireysel bir yaşam mücadelesinin nasıl toplumsal bir dönüşüme ilham verebileceğini göstermesi açısından dikkate değerdir.

The life story of Yusuf Ahmet Kulca presents a significant example for understanding the development of civil society initiatives aimed at supporting children forced to live on the streets in Turkey. His migration journey from Uygur-Xinjiang to Kashmir and later to Turkey, along with the traumas he experienced during childhood, transformed him into a social justice advocate. In the 1980s and 1990s, he made the problems he observed on the streets visible through the media, and later founded the Umut Çocukları (Children of Hope) Association, launching pioneering projects such as laundries, night shelters, and the “First Step Station.” This study examines the field impact of these initiatives and their contribution to shifting public perceptions. Drawing on interviews, newspaper reports, civil society documents, and academic sources, the research also focuses on the social resistance and financial challenges faced by the association. Due to diminishing financial support, Kulca eventually stepped down from his role and continued his struggle on an individual level, maintaining his support for children through production-based social enterprises and awareness projects. His story is noteworthy in showing how an individual life struggle can inspire broader social transformation.
