dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractSürmene bıçakçılığı 19. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Rumlarla beraber ortaya çıkan ve yaygınlaşarak hobiden mesleğe dönüşen bir el sanatıdır. 1952 yılına dek birçok ustanın geçim kaynağı olmasına rağmen getirilen yasak ile beraber üretiminde ciddi düşüş yaşanmıştır. Babadan oğula geçen bu zanaat, 1988’de yasağın kaldırılmasına rağmen eskisi kadar rağbet görmemiştir ve usta sayısında gözle görülür bir azalma olmuştur. Buna rağmen bu zanaatın ekonomiye, sosyal hayata ve Türk kültürüne katkısı olduğu su götürmez bir gerçektir. Kendine has yapım şekli ve özellikleri bulunan Sürmene bıçağı, günümüzde artan talep nedeniyle fabrikalar vasıtasıyla seri üretime geçmiştir. Fabrikalaşmanın beraberinde getirdiği olumlu ve olumsuz yönler, bıçak ustası Temel Karadeniz ve Sürmene halkı ile röportaj yapmak vasıtasıyla araştırılmıştır. Geçmişte ve günümüzde yaşanan olumsuzluklara rağmen Sürmene bıçağı Trabzon’un önemli bir parçası haline gelmeyi başarmış ve Sürmene’nin ihracatla birlikte dünyaya kapılarının açılmasına olanak sağlamıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractCutlery of Surmene has emerged with Greek towards the end of 19th century, and this handcraft has transformed from a hobby to a profession after becoming widespread. Although it has been a source of livelihood for lots of craftsman until 1952, the prohibition of cutlery has caused a significant decline in the production of knives. The handcraft which hands down from father to son has not drawn adequate interest even after the abolition of the ban in 1988, and number of craftsman has decimated. However, it is an indisputable fact that this handcraft has contributed to the economy, social life and Turkish culture. Surmene knives have unique production and properties. With increased demand, mass production of Surmene knives have started by factories. Interviews with Temel Karadeniz, and populace of Surmene have revealed positive, and negative impacts of the mass production. Despite the negations which have been experienced in the past, and nowadays; cutlery of Surmene has became a significant part of Trabzon, and exportation of Surmene knives have allowed Surmene to be universal.en_US
