dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | en_US |

dc.description.abstract | Carl Tobey 1918 yılında NewYork’ta doğdu, Princeton Üniversitesi’nde tarih bölümünü bitirdi. 1955 yılında Barış Gönüllüleri Programı ile Samsun Maarif Koleji’ne gönderilen öğretmenlerinden birisiydi. Ancak, görev süresi bitmesine rağmen Türkiye’de kalmak istedi, çevre iller ve yöre halkı ile olan iletişimi, botanik konusundaki çalışmaları ve Türk Kültürüne olan ilgisi ile dikkat çekti. Türkiye’de yaptığı geziler sırasında botanik bilimiyle ilgili yaptığı çalışmalar günümüzde bazı bitkilere adının verilmesini sağladı. 1991 yılında lenf kanseri olduğunu öğrendi ve kısa bir süre sonra hayatını kaybetti. Naaşı Samsun iline bağlı Kıranköy Mezarlığında bulunmaktadır. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Carl Tobey was born in New York in 1918 and graduated from Princeton University in history. He was one of the teachers sent to Samsun Maarif College with the Peace Volunteers Program in 1955. However, he wanted to stay in Turkey even though his term of office was over, and he drew attention with his communication with the surrounding provinces and local people, his studies on botany and his interest in Turkish Culture. During his travels in Turkey, his studies on botanical science provided many plants with be named after him. He learned that he had lymph cancer in 1991 and died a short time later. His body is in the Kıranköy Cemetery in Samsun. | en_US |
