U was founded in 1954 upon the suggestion of the United Nations and began its educational activities in 1956. Its goal was to train qualified human resources in technical fields for Turkey. In its early years, METU was known as the "Shack University," and in 1963, it moved to a new campus where, through afforestation projects, the barren land was transformed into a forest. The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1957 and developed rapidly. While education was initially provided with limited resources, over time, the laboratory infrastructure was strengthened. Despite the political crises in the 1970s, the academic staff was reinforced. Graduates made significant achievements in Turkey's construction sector and took prestigious positions on the international stage. Today, the Department of Civil Engineering at METU leads the sector with internationally recognized education and research, making pioneering contributions across a wide range of areas.
