Assyrians are one of the ancient peoples that have existed in Anatolia for 5500 years. They have kept their cultures alive in various regions of Turkey, especially in Antakya and Mardin regions. Their organization in Turkey dates back to the world's first church in Antakya, and then continued at the level of patriarchates and metropolitans. Due to the increasing terrorist attacks in the 20th century, some of their villages were evacuated and they had to migrate to various countries around the world. One of these villages is Kafro (Elbegendi in Turkish), which is connected to Midyat district of Mardin province. The Demir family is one of the families that immigrated to Europe in the 1990s. Aziz Demir, who is currently the headman of the village, returned to his village Kafro within the scope of the Return to Village Project (Köye Dönüş Projesi) and took an active role in the rebuilding of this place. The Assyrians, who returned to the village in the circular issued in 2001 and within the scope of the return to the village project implemented in 2004, created an east-west synthesis by bringing the cultures and innovations they observed in the diaspora to their own villages. Assyrians, who take great care not to assimilate in the countries they migrate to, still live their language, beliefs and culture as openly as possible.en_US
