Middle East Technical University was established in Ankara in 1965 as Middle East Technology Institute in order to provide advanced education in scientific and technical fields and to develop the region it is located in. It later became a university. METU started its education in the barracks near the Turkish Grand National Assembly and settled in its current campus in Ankara since the barracks became insufficient as the university grew. METU Ankara Campus is located on an axis in the north-south direction, and the campus has developed on this axis, which has been called “Alle” since its establishment and is seen as the spine of the campus. The “Alle”, which includes buildings, structures, sculptures, green spaces and other open spaces, has been the center of many social, political and cultural events.en_US
