| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | en_US |

| dc.description.abstract | Soğuk Savaşın kendisini en yoğun biçimde hissettirdiği dönemlerden biri olan 1960’lı yıllar aynı zamanda Uzay Yarışının kilometre taşlarından biri olan Vostok-1 misyonunun gerçekleştirildiği tarihi de kapsamaktadır. Yuri Gagarin’in uzaya çıkan ilk insan olmasıyla neticelenen bu mühim hadise tüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de geniş yankı bulmuştur. Bu makalede Vostok-1 misyonunun Türk basınında ele alınış biçimi, dönemin Türk dış politikasını şekillendiren olaylar göz önünde bulundurularak, ilgili zaman aralıklarındaki haberlerin taranması suretiyle incelendi. Dönemin politik atmosferinin haberleri ne ölçüde etkilediği tartışıldı. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | 1960’s as one of the most intense periods for Cold War, also includes Vostok-1 Space mission, one of the most remarkable steps of the Space Race. Successfully ending with Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to go to the space, the important event of Vostok-1 mission had great repercussions from all over the world, including Turkey. In this article, regarding the important factors that have impacts on Turkish foreign policy of the time, the way that Turkish media was covering the event is explained by the examination of the newspaper archives. It is also discussed how effective the political atmosphere of the time was on the news. | en_US |
