Amik gölünün kurutulması ve bölgeye etkileri

Amik Gölü, bölge halkı için çok önemli geçim kaynakları sağlamasına rağmen çeşitli zararları da beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu zararlara örnek olarak göl çevresindeki bataklıkların sıtma hastalığının yayılmasına sebep olması ve göl bölgesinde zaman zaman taşkınların yaşanması gösterilebilir. Bu zararlardan korunmak amacıyla gölün kurutulması işlemleri 1869 yılında yayınlanan dalyanlarla ilgili ilk resmi yazıyla başlamış olup 1975 yılında gölün haritadan silinmesi ile tamamlanmıştır. Ancak kurutma işlemleri bölgenin toprak verimliliğini ve su rejimini kötü yönde etkilemiş ve bölgede tarım faaliyetlerinin yürütülmesini zorlaştırmıştır. Buna ek olarak gölün kurutulmak istenmesindeki başlıca sebeplerden biri olan taşkınlar ise engellenmemiş ve gölün haritadan silinmesinin ardından onlarca yıl geçmesine rağmen taşkınlar yaşanmaya devam etmiştir.

Although Amik Lake provides very important livelihoods for the people of the region, it also brings various damages. Examples of these damages are the swamps around the lake causing the spread of malaria and the occasional flooding in the lake region. In order to protect from these damages, the process of drying the lake started with the first official article about the fisheries published in 1869 and was completed in 1975 with the deletion of the lake from the map. However, drying processes adversely affected the soil fertility and water regime of the region and made it difficult to carry out agricultural activities in the region. In addition, the floods, which is one of the main reasons for the desiccation of the lake, could not be prevented and the floods continued to occur even decades after the lake was deleted from the map.
